Description
A comprehensive training on Functional Communication Training as a function-based intervention, covering the theoretical foundation, why extinction alone is not sufficient, mand training procedures, the range of communication systems, reinforcement schedule progression, prompt fading, and generalization planning. Expanded content addresses real-time session management, caregiver consistency, and clinical decision-making when progress is slow or inconsistent.
Emphasis is placed on implementation fidelity and adapting FCT in complex, real-world situations.
Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
-
Define Functional Communication Training (FCT) and explain its theoretical basis in behavioral function
-
Describe why extinction alone is insufficient for long-term behavior reduction and how FCT addresses this gap
-
Identify the components of an FCT program, including mand training, communication system selection, and extinction pairing
-
Describe the major augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems and how RBTs support their use in FCT
-
Explain the role of prompt fading, response efficiency, and reinforcement schedules in FCT implementation
-
Recognize common implementation errors and how to implement FCT with fidelity across settings and people
Certificate
By completing/passing this course, you will attain the certificate PDU 4- Teaching Functional Communication
